THE CASTLE’S HISTORY Throughout its history, Egeskov has been owned by some of the most prominent Danish noble families: Brockenhuus, Ulfeldt, Bille-Brahe, and Ahlefeldt. Since 1784, Egeskov has been in the possession of the Bille family – ultimately Ahlefeldt-Laurvig-Bille, who live in the castle today.
Egeskov, which in the 1400s was an undefended manor, was built under Frands Brockenhuus in 1554 as a highly fortified structure and is among Northern Europe’s best-preserved water and Renaissance castles. The building reflects both the austere architectural style of the late Gothic era as well as the order of the Renaissance and was constructed during the transitional period between the two styles.
Frands Brockenhuus was one of the most educated men of his time, and as a vassal in Nyborg, he was among the king’s most trusted and innermost circle of power. He was later appointed the country’s military leader, Marshal, and lost his life during the siege of Varberg in Sweden during the Nordic Seven Years’ War (1563-70).
EGESKOV VINTAGE MUSEUM At Egeskov’s Vintage Museum, you can experience one of the finest and most visited collections in Northern Europe. It presents an incredibly varied collection of planes, motorcycles, and vintage cars, which the Ahlefeldt family has collected for more than half a century.
